Clean Room Controls, Design and Other Variables

Nasal Congestion- The Role of Humidity Control

While in Europe recently, I found that I didn't need to use nasal irrigation to prevent nasal congestion. I did bring along a travel WaterPik device which I often use for this purpose when away from home, but I didn't feel the need to use it even once for the entire month we were gone. I attribute this to the higher humidity levels in Europe compared to those in Colorado where we live.

I normally use nasal irrigation with a saline solution once or twice per day. It would be unthinkable to go for a month in Colorado without doing this. I would almost certainly come down with a sinus infection during this length of time, even while continuing to take my normal medication.

According to Dr. Robert Ivker, D.O., former President of the American Holistic Medical Association, the ideal level of relative humidity for sinus health is between 35-45%. I noticed in one of the hotels we stayed at in France that the humidity was in the low 70% range, and I'm sure it was at least that high at other times as well during the month. For whatever reason, this level of humidity seems to work better for my particular nasal congestion problems, and I have noticed before the general tendency of having fewer sinus problems while in Europe. We travel there fairly often as we operate tours in France. Dr. Ivker prefers to use a warm mist room humidifier which requires no filters and kills bacteria. He claims to have had good luck with Bionaire Clear Mist units.

Upon returning from this latest trip I decided to purchase an inexpensive humidity gauge and put it in our bedroom to deep a closer eye on the actual levels in our sleeping environment. Right now the levels are in the 50% range, which is pretty good. We live at over 7,000 feet of elevation, and we have several windows open at night at this time of year to cool off the room. During most of the year we do use a humidifier, especially in the winter months. When the furnace is on the humidity drops quite a bit, and I will now be able to monitor the levels and make better use of a humidifier with the humidity gauge. Air conditioning will also dry out the air in a room or in an automobile, so keeping close watch of this is important for people like me who continually battle nasal congestion problems.

The device I purchased was an inexpensive combination thermometer and humidity gauge. It was only about , but one can find digital devices with more functionality in the -40 range in stores like Kmart or Walmart. I would strongly recommend that people who suffer from chronic sinusitis make this small investment and keep a device to measure relative humidity in their sleep and also possibly their work environments. This simple item can be a significant tool in the regimen of all sinus sufferers to help prevent nasal congestion, especially while sleeping.

Air Conditioners, What Could Be More Important Than A Good Brand Name

A common misconception about air conditioning equipment is that Brand Name is the best indicator of quality. While it is true
that some brands are better than others, this is not the main criterion you should use when making your buying decision. You
may do yourself a great disservice if you overlook this.

The most important factor regarding central air conditioners and heat pumps, without exception, is the quality of the installation.

A high-end air conditioning system installed in an unprofessional manor, without regard for quality of installation or proper sizing will not perform any better than a low-end system installed with emphasis on the quality of the installation.

For example the compressor contactor. The contactor is the device that operates the compressor. Each time the compressor starts, the contactor closes. The more often the compressor starts and stops the faster this part will wear out.

The compressor is another example. It is common knowledge the greatest amount of wear on a car engine is at start up. The
same is true of an air conditioner compressor. There is oil in the compressor and each time it cycles off the oil drains from the bearings and gets picked up again at startup. Because there is less oil for lubrication at startup, this is when the greatest amount of compressor wear happens. If your air conditioner cycles on and off 4 or 5 times per hour instead of the normal 2 or 3 times per hour it only makes sense that this causes more wear on the compressor.

These are only some of problems associated with over sized and undersized air conditioning equipment. There are other complications that add to these problems and cost you more money. So when shopping for a new air conditioning system get more than one or two prices and make sure the contractor does proper load calculations so you can avoid these problems.

Humidity in Climate Control

Humidity has a large role in climate and climate control along with temperature. Most people recognize humidity as moisture or dampness in the air. It is basically the amount of water vapor molecules in the air.

Humidity may also be measured in many different ways, Absolute humidity is the volume of water vapor in the air. Specific humidity is the mass of water in the air. Relative humidity is the amount of vapor in the air to the amount it might hold when saturated shown as a percentage. For example (RH%)=65%. Relative humidity has the phenomenon of decreasing when temperature increases while the actual quantity of water vapor stays the same.

It's often relative humidity that is referred to in climate control, weather forecasts, buildings and enclosed spaces, health and safety etc.

Associated with relative humidity is dew point, dew-point is when temperature can't hold the water vapors any longer, the vapors then condense into liquid, at which point it is 100% relative humidity. Both dew-point and real temperatures are the same at this point. Therefor a change in temperature will cause a change in humidity.

Humidity and temperature are the main environmental reasons which causes decay and deterioration, timbers rot, metals corrode, textiles fade and deteriorate more quickly, Insects and molds generally like a warm damp environment. Humidity can be measured with a hygrometer or psychrometer, but generally with high levels of dryness or dampness in the environment, you can feel it on your skin. Humidity can be controlled with a humidistat (humidity controller) this is what is used to regulate the humidity independent of temperature even though both have an effect on each other.

Humidifiers and dehumidifiers are generally used to control relative humidity. Humidifiers introduce moisture into the air by using either a steam generator or an ultrasonic humidifier. A dehumidifier is basically an air-conditioner although it can be used in reverse for heating; moisture from the air is condensed on the cooling coils, and removed with a hose or collected in a bucket.
